MANNING CHAPEL

Manning Chapel was built in 1963, thereby shifting the spiritual focus of the campus from daily worship services being held in the large auditorium of University Hall.  The architectural commission for Manning Chapel went to Harold Wagoner of Philadelphia, who, it might be said, returned Acadia to its earlier tradition of architectural excellence.  The refined classical lines of the Chapel have never ceased winning acclaim for the University, nor has Manning Chapel waned in the affections of the many graduates who choose the venue for their nuptials (this artist included).  The Chapel features a 114’ tower and is constructed of Vermont marble and granite quarried near Shelburne.   The interior of Manning Chapel was not slighted either.  Nearly half a million dollars was spent on tasteful interior appointments, which include the unique stain glass windows that offer bright images from both interior and exterior light sources.  The twenty stop classical organ was built in Quebec and is dedicated to Acadia’s war dead.
